Seven chapters run from raw 1970s funk through Afrobeat, jazz fusion and disco to the global diaspora, with rarity scores, collector’s checkboxes and full-color original artwork throughout. For years, coverage of African popular music outside the continent has been sporadic and incomplete, left to a small number of academics, collectors, and a handful of labels exporting the artists deemed marketable. Many African artists, wildly popular in their own regions, reached listeners in the Global North only through those scattershot channels. Recent years have brought serious reissue work and DJs pushing beyond Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba — but few attempts to dig deeply and authoritatively into the subject. 'Writing a book on African music is like deciding you want to write a symphony — but before you can write the music, you first have to invent every instrument in the orchestra.' — Uchenna Ikonne Featuring Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor, King Sunny Adé, Manu Dibango, and more, this collection includes 16 essential compilations, 19 guest selector lists from DJs, musicians, label heads, scholars and journalists, and an extended interview with Manu Boubli and Uchenna Ikonne. Also included are a guide to 19 regional styles, rarity scores, collector’s checkboxes, and a full index of artists and guest performers." - Dust & Grooves

soft cover w/ die-cut cover window

240 pages

first edition of 2500

dimensions: 5.8" × 8.3"

weight: 1 lb

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0105/4542/files/ADKq_NZHWSGUUjc9XCvMB2E51PLy0JLw2cdulxbPajs_8hMwS4E2xQc9z1-xv5KPorsqCnXy0jnL6676KYAcViZmCn22NDchvYEoM4jXVlXL2qAacLf7WkCjuKuDCD5iAerrwjfsPP7rDlpNWi61W1mT2fahcjidEpjaDO60IwiDwiX12vnWHw.jpg?v=1792772191
https://www.turntablelab.sbs/products/manu-boubli-uchenna-ikonne-african-funk-soul-disco-vinyl-digest-2-book
