There's plenty of thrashing guitars and growling vocals, but those harsher, darker moments are broken up with killer melodic breakdowns and other toned-down moments of...chaotic calm. Between the rhythmic shifts, mood changes, and sometimes stylistic variations ("Ants Of The Sky" country detour? Wow!), the group somehow finds fluidity, and tracks on Colors flow from one to the next w/ little or no bumps. It's as if the 8-tracker was one long song, but with enough musical permutations fill up multiple conventional albums.
