James\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e had just two singles to his name (\u003cem\u003eAnalogue Bubblebath 1 \u0026amp; 2\u003c\/em\u003e). \u003cem\u003eSAW85-92\u003c\/em\u003e is a world away from from James’ frenetic later work, but the \u003cstrong\u003eRDJ\u003c\/strong\u003e pedigree is fully intact. With the exception of \"I\", \u003cem\u003eSAW85-92\u003c\/em\u003e contains very little of what we would classify as *ambient* (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.sbs\/search?\u0026amp;q=selected%20ambient%20works\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Aphex%20Twin%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eSAW Volume II\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e is much more true to its name). Showcased instead are \u003cstrong\u003eRDJ\u003c\/strong\u003e’s early experiments in ethereal rave (\"Xtal,\" \"Heliosphan\"), Detroit-inspired electro (\"Ptolemy,\" \"Delphium\") and proto-IDM (\"Actium,\" \"Schottky 7th Path\"). Still making us misty-eyed after 25 years, we’ve yet to come across anything quite like it.
