The inclusion of lyrics (CD version only) is a welcome insight into the world of \u003cstrong\u003eDOOM\u003c\/strong\u003e (no more rewinding!); and \u003cstrong\u003eMadlib\u003c\/strong\u003e, who sometimes is stretched too thin, steps up to this endeavor with some of his most textural work to date. It’s remarkable what Mad Pro manages to accomplish using just the core elements of a track. He takes a pure razor and tape approach in “Risingson (Setting Sun Dub 2),” subtly rearranging the song’s parts, juxtaposing disparate loops on top of one another, delaying the hell out of the track’s snare like it’s in bopping around inside a centrifuge for all eternity. By contrast, he constructs an entirely new groove for “Angel (Angel Dust),” detaching the tune from its original manifestation as brooding doom metal lovers rock. The “Teardrop” dub recycles little from the original besides specters of a chord progression, a bastardization of the bassline and tiny snatches of vocals (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.sbs\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Liz+Fraser\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLiz Fraser\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e dubwise = I can now die happily). Fortunately, they're all watersheds of mid\/late 90s electronic music production, and have dated well. The full length that established DJ Shadow as \"the Jimi Hendrix of the sampler\" (what does that even mean) is still an eminently impressive production debut, almost 10 years later. Everyone knows it was made entirely out of samples, but at the core of this album, each track transcends beyond this limitation and becomes something truly new, making it a desert island pick. OK, enough already, here are the songs: \"Building Steam With a Grain of Salt\" has a crazy drum breakdown, \"Number Song\" is based off a Metallica sample, \"Changeling\" is in like 3\/7 time, \"Midnight In a Perfect World\" is a genre-defining masterstroke, and \"What Does Your Soul Look Like Pt 1\" is the elegant capstone on the whole affair.
