The project of Frenchman Ludovic Navarre originally began as part of the early wave of French Touch producers. Over the course of a few EPs Navarre moved from the filtered house that helped spawn the likes of Daft Punk and DJ Falcon towards a more jazz and dub influenced style. House music was still a big part of his 1995 full length, Boulevard, but it was as if he had stumbled on something completely different. Working with live musicians he was able to weave together the disparate strains of jazz and house, and add his contribution to what would become known as acid jazz. Five years later, following a relatively quiet period, St Germain returned with Tourist. Now on Blue Note (and Parlophone), with acid jazz in full swing, things were falling into all of the right places. And even though I keep saying acid jazz, please don't take it the wrong way. The material featured on Tourist has aged remarkably well. Far from being the gimmicky sax solo over house beat, the music is produced and arranged with skill. Many of the tracks would not be out of place in a Theo Parrish mix. The opener, "Rose Rouge," sets the stage for everything that is to follow. It takes its time to develop and that is part of the quality of the track. Given the standard that was set with Tourist it is no surprise that it still sounds so good today.

black double vinyl pressing

gatefold sleeve

original release year: 2000

music label: Parlophone 2026

reviewed by Señor Sueño Latino 05/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0105/4542/files/stgermain-tourist-blackvinyl-1_42bd9311-4c9e-4324-9941-210fb402a3f2.jpg?v=1793637520
rodriguez-cold-fact-mobile-fidelity-180g-vinyl-2lp
Rodriguez: Cold Fact (Mobile Fidelity 180g, 45rpm) Vinyl 2LP

"Mastered at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s California studio, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, the reissue label’s numbered-edition 180g 45RPM 2LP set presents Cold Fact in definitive sound. There's definite themes that emerge when you read the older ones. Let me set this one up. The Lab starts as a hardcore turntablist site selling dj equipment and battle records. We start a section of the site called "The Goodz" and start introducing non-turntablist stuff like Gangstarr singles. That section becomes our fastest growing section and we quickly morph into a site known for hip-hop and funk. Along with the hip-hop comes the sense of "keeping it real," but certain records (such as Aphex Twin, Bjork, and this one) don't fit into this schema. Therefore, we had to overcompensate in our reviews to keep the "realness" intact. Funny thing is, these type of records always flew off the shelves (a reflection of that emo-loner that is the proto-lab-head). So check out this vintage review and see if you catch the themes:

Read recently an interview with Bobbito recalling a past interview he did with Premier. He played him a Smiths or Cure song and Premier knew what it was, he followed by saying he saw them in concert.
